opening doors programme

The Advocacy Team are proud to run ‘Opening Doors’ a bespoke training programme designed to support people who come from backgrounds that are under-represented in the international development sector to make that first crucial leap into paid career opportunities. The programme is inspired by successful initiatives that exist to support people from ethnic minority and or working-class backgrounds to access career opportunities in the law, investment banking, the civil service and the arts. Co-designed by staff with many years of experience working within the international development sector, and with young people who aspire to pursue a career in international development, this three-month access programme will support participants to develop new skills, expand their professional networks and access targeted careers advice and support.

All trainees will receive guidance from experts working in international development,  covering how to write CVs and cover letters, how to prepare for and approach interviews with development agencies; opportunities to practice for ‘mock interviews’ and advice on how to get feedback from interviews, bounce-back from unsuccessful interviews, and continue to learn from the process.

The programme will also cover:

  • Learning Sessions: in-person seminars that will provide practical, real-world insight into the main career pathways in international development.

  • Skills Sessions: opportunities to develop professional skills to stand-out in the job application process.

  • Networking Sessions: designed to build, or expand participants’ professional networks through opportunities to meet and interact with staff from across the international development sector alongside feedback and guidance on networking skills.

If you want to register your interest in joining the next cohort, please fill in your details on the website contact form.
